Abstract

This work presents the preliminary results of a research whose focus is to identify the practices in the heritage language present in a family nucleus
of Italian immigrants, constituted in 1958, which has a peculiar characteristic: members of the first and second generations born in Brazil use only Italian as a means of communication with each other. The research data were generated using Oral History Methodology and the data analysis is based on studies on heritage languages, bilingualism and translanguaging. The article is divided into three parts: a presentation of the history and constitution of the Conci-Maggio family; the theoretical basis and a brief analysis of autobiographical narratives to identify actions that contributed to the maintenance of the heritage language in the family space and, finally, a reflection on the process of revitalizing heritage languages and the contributions of this research to studies on language policies in family
spaces.

Author Biographies

  • Fernanda Landucci Ortale, Universidade de São Paulo

    Fernanda Landucci Ortale has a master's degree and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from UNICAMP. She did her postdoctoral work at the University of Aveiro and since 2016 has been dedicated to research on teaching and training teachers of heritage languages in a post-method perspective. She is currently an associate professor in the area of Italian at the University of São Paulo and adviser of master's and doctoral students of the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Língua, Literatura e Cultura Italianas.

  • Gabrielle Cristina Baumann Salvatto, Universidade de São Paulo

    Gabrielle Cristina Baumann Salvatto completed her master's degree and is currently conducting her PhD research (CAPES) in Língua, Literatura e Cultura Italianas at USP. She graduated in Portuguese and Italian from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp). Since graduation she has devoted herself to the study of subjectivities, their constructions and manifestations. She currently develops research on Italian as a language and culture of inheritance, focusing on teaching-learning through an autobiographical approach and producing teaching material, as well as developing preparation courses for certification exams in Italian.
