Sérgio Vaz is considered the poet of the urban periphery. Aged 60 years, he lives in Taboão da Serra and is a cultural activist in the urban peripheries of Brazil in addition to writing. He founded Cooperifa (Cultural Cooperative of the Periphery) and one of the creators of Sarau da Cooperifa – a movement that transformed a bar in the outskirts of southern São Paulo into a cultural hub. In addition to gathering of readers and writers, the project turned the rooftop of the bar into an improvised cinema, opening space for alternative film production in the neighborhoods. He also authored the Project Poetry Against Violence, which travels to public schools, encouraging reading and poetic creation as tools of art and citizenship.
