One of the main parts of Mário de Andrade´s theory on Brasil-the baroque style is studied using four chornicles published by Mario de Andrade in 1920. In these chronicles, the author focuses upon architecture, sculpture and painting and reognizes the intricacy and richness of Minas Gerais´s artistic works. From the creators of these works, Mário de Andrade distinguishes the artist Aleijadinho and works with the social function as the criterion for recognition of this sculptor as the best expression of brazilian national spirit. It is concluded that, at that moment in time, Mário de Andrade´s critical thought associated baroque style, nationalism and German culture, making room for the valorization of our own historical heritage.Downloads
