The article provides an analysis of the evolution of the social capital concept, based on Bourdieu´s theory and its developments among European, North American and Brazilian authors. The concept appears as an individual attribute and part of the collective action within social networks, influencing at the trust and civic engagement levels. The text stresses the most recent theories of Putnam´s work, and the controversy caused by his theories, to whom TV and the Internet are directly involved in the decline of social capital.Downloads
