In search of refractions in Brazilian literature in translation - reviewing the tool of analysis

Abstract

The translation modalities descriptive model accounts for the surface structure differences that can be determined when conducting a word-for-word comparison between the source language text and its equivalent target language(s) text(s). The model, as consolidated in Aubert (1998), is here reviewed as a result of studies conducted on translated Brazilian literature and attempts to establish consistencies with other approaches, particularly those that focus on the effects of cultural markers and those that map the enunciative operations (Culioli 2000) present in the originals and in their respective translations. The model thus redefined would seem to provide an improved description of the specificities of literature translation.
