João de Araújo Correia (1899-1985), a renowned Portuguese short story writer and chronicler, was also an enthusiastic epistolographer. For around forty years he kept copies of the letters he sent, both handwritten and typed. In the currently available twelve volumes of his correspondence, there are, in some cases, two different versions of the same text. The objective of this study is to understand the author's writing process and the principles that guide it, having as theoretical support Jean-Michel Adam’s work in the field of text linguistics. It appears that rewriting mainly affects the length of the text and linguistic formulation. This process is inseparable from the type of letter in question, resulting from the relationship between the sender and the recipient, due to the self-image that the first wants to transmit to the second and to possible future readers, as well as the image of these that the former has or anticipates.
