This study addresses the inter-artistic relations between music, art and literature in Sonia Coutinho's short stories. The aim is to analyze the integration of verbal and musical constructions as a complex system in which the melodic structure projects and acts simultaneously in the constitution and representation of the characters in Coutinho’s stories. The interpretive approach of the stories allows us to observe the significant relationships between discursive and sonic elements. Theories about the relationship between literature and music and Feminist Literary Criticism provided the theoretical basis for the social-historical context of the analysis. The atmosphere built in the stories by jazz music and characters superimposed with images of cinema divas illustrates the intertextual play character produced by the author in her fiction.
