Abstract

In this article, based on the accusation of plagiarism addressed to Júlio Ribeiro by Alberto Sales, we analyze the conflicting positions about the ideal model of the organization of sciences and, above all, the use of theoretical references in the linguistic production in Brazil in the 19th century, such as the importance of classical studies and the conception of education. Leaving aside the moral dimension of the issue regarding plagiarism, what matters to us is to think that, further than being a simple copy, there is a whole work of re-signification upon the theoretical references on the part of Júlio Ribeiro, arguing that he demonstrates understanding of metalinguistics transfer between languages from the Greco-Latin grammar tradition to the composition of a grammar.
