Ellsworth Huntington: considerações sobre a correspondência referente ao mapa de “distribuição da civilização” da obra Civilization and climate

Os esforços intelectuais de Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), autor que sofreu significativa influência do Darwinismo Social, cumpriram um papel decisivo para fortalecer a Geografia Humana estadunidense no início do século XX. O artigo busca contribuir para a clarificação de um importante episódio ocorrido durante o período de expansão da Geografia universitária nos EUA que foi a elaboração, por esse geógrafo, de um mapa de “distribuição da civilização” que buscava hierarquizar as regiões do mundo em uma escala de 0 a 10. O mapa foi publicado em um dos capítulos da obra “Civilization and Climate”, que teve a sua primeira edição em 1915 e uma terceira edição estendida em 1924. Essa obra é uma das primeiras tentativas mais sistemáticas de discussão de uma epistemologia geográfica específica e de elaboração de uma teoria geográfica da história que foram produzidas nos EUA, fato que confere a ela importância bastante singular na história da Geografia.
