Capitalismo e a mídia: economia, moral, bem-estar e capacidades

Resumen

Este artículo pretende contribuir a la renovación de cómo se consideran los medios de comunicación y la cultura bajo el capitalismo, buscando fundamentos normativos sólidos para la crítica desde varios elementos compatibles: la economía moral, el bienestar entendido como florecimiento, el enfoque de las capacidades de Sen y Nussbaum, y el valor de la cultura. Considerando que no se ha prestado suficiente atención a las cuestiones normativas y conceptuales respecto al capitalismo, los medios de comunicación y la cultura, los enfoques de economía moral pueden contribuir a colmar esta laguna, aportando un valioso enfoque ético de la economía y la sociedad compatible con una mejor economía política. Este artículo esboza el enfoque de las capacidades, analiza aplicaciones poco frecuentes de este a los medios de comunicación y la cultura, y explica cómo se podrían desarrollar estas aplicaciones, exponiendo el trabajo de Nussbaum de manera que se pueda contribuir al florecimiento de las personas al fundamentar la crítica en una comprensión del valor potencial de los medios de comunicación y la cultura.

  • David Hesmondhalgh, University of Leeds

    Doctorado por la Universidad Goldsmiths de Londres en 1996, es profesor de Medios de Comunicación, Música y Cultura en la Universidad de Leeds. Sus intereses incluyen las industrias culturales y creativas, la política cultural, la política de la experiencia musical y cómo las "plataformas culturales" están transformando los medios de comunicación. Se incorporó a la Universidad de Leeds en 2007, tras haber trabajado durante ocho años en la Open University.
