  • Speeches in and about Latin America
    Vol. 17 No. 2 (2024)

Since the arrival of Europeans to the continent they came to call America in 1492, this part of the globe has been the target of countless interpretations that aimed to construct the specificities of the people, flora and fauna that exist here, under the aegis of the exploratory European colonial system. Following the independence processes that took place in the 19th century, these specificities were rethought by Eurocentric Creole elites, with a view to forming and legitimizing their respective national states. In the 20th century, marked by intense ideological divisions, Latin Americans once again sought to reformulate the bases of the political pacts responsible for maintaining the “imagined communities” created by nationalism since emancipation from Europeans. Considering these and other layers of time and historical meanings, this issue of Revista Extraprensa focuses on the communication strategies employed by a wide range of social agents, such as political party leaders, representatives of social movements, minority groups, and intellectuals, with a view to forming an ideology about Latin America that can explain its singularities in relation to other peoples and continents. In short, what remains of the idea of nationalism responsible for the creation of Latin American identities? How can we (re)think Latin America and its discourses about itself based on what is common and different to us at the same time?

  • Carnaval: cultura e a educação das relações étnico-raciais – imagem do íbero-ásio-afro-ameríndio
    Vol. 14 No. 1 (2020)

The articles presented here reflect on the appropriated carnival as an expression of the African matrix culture. The sense of subversion and differentiation takes on the perspective of race relations. The systemic context of racist oppression against black men and women in Brazil expressed, for example, by subalternization in professional, political, and economic life, is subverted in the cultural scene not only with the black presence in the protagonism of carnival events, but with the impression of the marks of a culture that, according to Muniz Sodré, is an essential dimension of Brazilian culture. Thus, carnival joyfully expresses the real image of a country that denies itself - an "amphrican" country.
