Abstract

African cultures played quite a significant role in the consolidation and development of the many Brazilian Carnivals. This is the case, in particular, of the Carnival in Bahia, which is unconceivable outside the flashy landmarks of the African cultural matrices that have added life, color and rhythm to the festivities, in the course of time. This relevance is also confirmed by the current market of celebrations that extracts a valuable symbolic capital out of such uses. Nevertheless, this presence asserts itself and is asserted, amidst the many disputes and confrontations waged by African-Brazilian organizations of Bahia against the festive practices conducted by elite groups, which are largely prejudiced and discriminatory.
