Materiality in the Translation of 'Verses of Astronomy' by Rosa Araneda into a Cordel Literature

In this article, we engage in a dialogue between two expressions of Latin American popular literature: the Popular Lyre of Chile and the Cordel of Brazil. Our focus centers on a translation and editing project that culminated in the release of translated versions of the poem "Verses of Astronomy" (ARANEDA, 2023) by the Chilean author Rosa Araneda (1850-1894). These translations have been presented in a printed format, resembling the format of cordel pamphlets, for Spanish-speaking readers, and in a digital edition for online dissemination.Within the framework of our annotated translation, we highlight the significance of compositional elements in popular literature, discuss the formal aspects of verse in harmony with semantic aspects, and emphasize the importance of cultural studies reflection for an understanding through the translation task.
