This article aims to develop a reflection on the conception of public school that carries a meaning akin to samba school, a place where the drumbeat is a privilege and where samba is born in the heart, just as said in the song called “Feitio de Oração”, composed by the samba musicians Noel Rosa and Vadico. This conception was based on a doctorate research conducted in a public high school in São Paulo, about the aesthetical commitment of young high school students, which involved musical activities related to rap and jazz music. The principle of Arkhé as conceived by Muniz Sodré suggests an alternative way of thinking about the relationship between the individual and the community that promotes recognition and affection; therefore, we suggest a concept of school as a place of aesthetical commitment, where gestures meaning is intrinsic, and not external.
