This article presents an introduction to Georges Didi-Huberman’s thought, focusing on his interpretation of the concept of “symptom”, “figurability”, and other aspects of Freudian psychoanalysis, as a critical interpretation of notions of representation, resemblance and imitation, as well as of the Panofsky’s iconological method. The article demonstrates how these concepts are operated by the author, questioning the mimetic device and claiming an opening in the regime of painting’s that gives way to its figurability. By evoking the idea of an “image-symptom”, Didi-Huberman proposes a rupture with the schematisms of art criticism and historiography.
