Abstract

This article aims at presenting a brief historical panorama of the connections between literary criticism and the teaching of literature. Focusing on the critical debates in the sphere of English language literature, the discussion is divided into three parts: the function of criticism since the eighteenth century; the transformations which took place as of the 1960’s; and, lastly, the contribution of theories which emphasize the dialectical interpretation of literary texts.
