The study of Raul Pompeia’s literary and stylistic program is the focus of this article. To analyze it, primary and secondary sources were used, that is, both the interpretations that the writer himself had of his work and his critics were analyzed, as well as the critical analyzes (current and at the time). With a focus on his chronicles and his masterpiece Canções sem metro, the findings allow us to affirm that the main characteristic of Pompeii’s literary legacy consists in the fact that it gave the prose text the same rhythmic aspect of poetry: the rhythm becomes synonymous with literary eloquence, its correct expression being the first objective of a truly artistic work.
