ŚRĪ ŚĀNTĀDURGĀ DEVĪ: preliminary analysis of Goan textual sources in Portuguese language

Abstract

This article presents a preliminary analysis of the sacred landscape associated with the goddess Śrī Śāntādurgā in the Old Conquests during the begining of Portuguese colonialism in Goa. In the sixteenth century, this region underwent major changes and Hindu temples were devastated. A detailed survey of the ancient Forals of Ilhas, Salcette and Bardez was conducted in order to retrieve and revise information on the extent of the worship of female deities, with an emphasis on its most popular goddess, Santeri – Śāntādurgā. The interdiscursivity present at this textual stratigraphy shows an ambivalent character, providing an indirect and detailed portrait of the ongoing transformations at that time.
