Mindfulness-based intervention for caregivers of older adults with dementia

Abstract

Objective: to analyze the effects of Intervention with Mindfulness on depressive, anxious symptoms and burden of family caregivers of elderly people with dementia. Methods: this is a randomized controlled clinical trial with a sample (n = 29) composed of the Intervention Group with Mindfulness (n = 11) and the Control Group (n = 18). There were eight meetings, during four months, and evaluated by the Zarit Overload scales and the Scale of symptoms of anxiety and depression. Results: the intervention group showed improvement in anxiety and depression (p = 0.048) while for the control group, no significant differences were found for the outcome variables. Conclusion: these results highlight the importance of Mindfulness-based intervention for caregivers of elderly people with dementia to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
