The dynamics of technological innovation in the hotel sector in times of COVID-19 pandemic in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro

Tourism and hospitality have faced adverse consequences in the face of the large-scale infectious disease outbreaks. Although part of the global hospitality sector has already faced several crises, COVID-19 has led to the suspension and bankruptcy of many of those enterprises. However, it fostered the emergence of new paradigms in service provision in the hotel industry. In this context, technological innovation is gaining ground with the purpose of providing solutions to the imposition of physical distancing maintaining guest safety. Thus, the objective of this article is to identify the technological innovations adopted by national and international hotel chains located in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, this exploratory-descriptive research adopted a qualitative approach, using bibliographic review and documental research carried out by collecting primary data from a documentary source on the websites of the hotel chains. As a result, the implementations related to technological innovation in hotel chains were identified as recurrent and restricted to: use of mobile check-in systems; contactless check-in and check-out machines; cleaning robot systems; use of applications and of QR code. In addition, it was observed that implementation of robotic automation or Artificial Intelligence is still absent in the hotel chains surveyed. Finally, this study is expected to contribute to discussions on the topic in the national context, considering the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in the hospitality industry.
