Abstract

Cycling tourism is an activity that is expanding worldwide, since it makes traveling or visiting destinations and tourist attractions possible in a more sustainable way, with increased mobility and while doing physical exercise. This article aims to identify the profile of cyclists and bicycle tourists in Santa Catarina, in its socioeconomic aspects and motivations for using the bicycle as a leisure, recreational, and/or physical activity. This research has a quantitative focus, being descriptive with a survey design. Questionnaires were applied by using a virtual platform for cyclists and bicycle tourist and quantified on a spreadsheet for data analysis. The main variables, age, education, and monthly income were considered together to identify the profile of the cyclist and bicycle tourist, due to the  equipment and maintenance costs that bicycles currently have. The main motivations found for cycling were physical exercise, discovering natural landscapes and cultural heritage, and making new friends. We concluded that planning cycling routes or encouraging the use of bicycles as a tourist attraction requires specific goods and services considering the needs and expectations of this audience.
