Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is seldom recognized in our country although it is the leading infant death cause in the first year in industrialized countries. It is seen in apparently healthy, well-nourished and cared for children in the first year of life with a peak incidence between the 3
rd and 4th month. The aim of this revision is to show how it has been historically seen, to analyze the most important hypotheses and the risk factors associated to it as well as to show the present situation in Brazil and in the world.
