Functional integrity of the immune system is essential for the success of the several modalities of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In this review we discuss immunologic recovery after HSCT, the role of cytokines and histocompatibility antigens on the complications and results of transplantation and the use of HSCT for treatment of immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases.
