Objective: analyzing the perception of patient safety culture according to the nursing staff of a public tertiary hospital. Methods: this is a descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out in a Brazilian public tertiary hospital between July and September 2020. The participants were nursing professionals, including assistants, technicians, and nurses, who had been working at the hospital for more than six months and had a minimum weekly workload of 20 hours. Absentees during the data collection period, regardless of the reason, were excluded, in addition to those whose questionnaires had less than 50% of the questions answered, which only contained answers for the socio-occupational profile and/or with the same answer in all dimensions. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was used for data collection. The chi-square and ANOVA tests were used for statistical analysis, with a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05). Results: a total of 81 professionals participated. The overall percentage of positive responses was regular (69.28%). Of the 12 dimensions evaluated, four were strong areas (average of 80.19%) and one was weak (42.39%). As for identifying and reporting adverse events, 70% did not. Nursing technicians had a better perception of patient safety than nurses (p=0.006) and rated patient safety as excellent (p<0.001). Conclusion: Nursing professionals classified the perception of patient safety culture as regular. The findings point to the need to strengthen and encourage the reporting of adverse events, and to replace the traditional, punitive culture with a fair one, providing a working environment that values and encourages patient safety.
