Abstract

Dilemmas about territorial and political unity had been markedly present in the debates concerning the independence of iberoamerican nations, not only in the Portuguese part of the continent, as well as in the Spanish one. However, each one of them followed its own path, towards very divergent directions, which results in a distrustful relationship and, consequently, a significant distance between both of them. The text Ensayo sobre la necesidad de una federación general entre los Estados Hispano-americanos y plan de su organización, written in 1824 by Bernardo Monteagudo, exemplifies the view that Hispanic American people had on the Brazilian government and its relations with Europe, the reason being some pertinent extracts regarding that question are transcribed here.
