Salmonella Canada - a new poultry pathogen

Abstract

Serotype S. Canada (4,12:b-1,6), described for the first time by YURACK et al.(1961) in Canada from 63 isolates from human patients with inaparent infection or showing enteric and renal symptoms, was isolated, presumably for the first time, in broilers in Brazil. The organism was isolated in pure culture from liver and unabsorbed yolk of chicks with 4-30 days of age showing 5-23 per cent mortality. The organism showed a low pathogenicity when inoculated orally but was highly pathogenic by the intraperitonial route.
