Abstract

This article examines the blood ritual complex of early sixteenthcentury Mesoamerica, focusing on the decades preceding and immediately following the conquest. The first part establishes the connection between blood rituals and the development and expansion of the Aztec state. The second part analyzes the repression unleashed by the Spanish against blood rituals along with the development of strategies of native resistance.
