Abstract

Based on a theoretical and historiographical perspective, this paper discusses the issue of the relation between cities and integration processes during the Hellenistic Age from a Global Ancient History standpoint. For this purpose, the texts consists of five parts: a brief presentation of the problem as applied to Hellenistic Delos; a bibliographic review of recent literature on Hellenistic cities; a more in-depth discussion of Vlassopoulos’ and Guarinello’s proposals for the history of ancient globalizations / integration processes; proposal of a new model built upon Bourdieu’s field theory mixed with the former two; a brief application of this model to the urbanism in Late Hellenistic Delos. The paper argues in favor of ‘field theory,’ enriched by Vlassopoulos’ and Guarinello’s insights, to reflecting on the historical integration processes without losing sight of societies as totalities.
