This study confronts the spatial distribution patterns of the Greek protomai recovered at Gela — colony founded by oecists from Rhodes and Crete — and Rhodes. The analysis of the contextual evidence points out the specialized function assumed by this artifact at Gela and the Geloan hinterland: the protome is one of the most frequent agalma found in Demeter’s sanctuaries. The funerary function customary attested in Rhodian sites (Camiros, Ialisos) is insignificant in Sicily.
