Abstract

From Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges, La Cité Antique (The Ancient City) is one of the most important works of the second half of the nineteenth century, whose influence on the French historiography up to 1930 was singular, and also inspired many reflections in the second half of the twentieth century. This article aims to re-evaluate this oeuvre, considering the contemporary criticism, aiming to broaden, especially in the Brazilian historiography, the debates around one of the works that were the basis for many generations of historians, archaeologists, and scholars of ancient literature.

Author Biography

  • Guilherme Moerbeck, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro

    Doutor em História Antiga (UFF-2013), Pós-doutorado em Ensino de História (FGV-2016) e Visiting Research Fellow, Department of Classics, Brown University. Lecionou por catorze anos no ensino Básico, nas redes pública e privada. Atualmente, é professor adjunto da área de Teoria e Ensino no Departamento de História da UERJ, chercheur associé da Faculté des Sciences de l’Éducation - Université de Montréal e pós-doutorando junto ao LABECA/MAE-USP, sob supervisão da Profª Maria Beatriz Florenzano. Autor de dois livros em História Antiga: Guerra, Política e Tragédia na Grécia Clássica (Paco Editorial, 2014); Entre a religião e a política: Eurípides e a Guerra do Peloponeso (Prismas, 2017) e de artigos nesta e em outras áreas. Foi laureado como Destaque no Prêmio Professores do Brasil/MEC – 2017.
