Abstract

The protection of water resources involves monitoring and evaluating their quality along the rivers setting goals and controlling discharges of pollutants looking for to keep an acceptable level of water quality. The understanding of self-purification of water bodies constitutes a basic element for the adoption of these measures and actions. So this review objective to report some of the most important processes of the selfpurification phenomenon focusing on the biological processes, which are the main inducer of ecological changes and balance reinstatement in the aquatic environment.
