Abstract

The main goal of this paper is discussing the relationship and symbolic communication between artists and society in Syria before and after the beginning of the war, in 2011. We aim to examine the question of the role of the artist in questioning the status quo along the dictatorship which has begun in 1970 with Hāfid Alasad and maintained in the years 2000 by his son Baššār Alasad. During this period of time, even under threat of a violent authoritarian military government, many forms of artistic expression critical to the regime bloomed in the many fields of arts. Among them, the political cartoons were important means of expression to make censored critical thinking public. We aim to investigate the importance of the political funnies of Alī Firzāt for the Syrian society which lives under censorship, and shall act as if they agreed with the regime.
