Abstract

This book, Strangers at Our Door, published in the United Kingdom in 2016, translated by Carlos Alberto Medeiros and published in Brazil by the Zahar publisher in 2017, is one of the last books published by sociologist and philosopher of postmodernity Zygmunt Bauman. The book has six chapter, 119 pages, and it is an essay on the issues regarding migratory movements of the 21st century. Bauman, who also had his life history marked by migration, analyzes some of the issues he had already addressed in his book Wasted Lives, 2004. Focusing on the influx increase of people in the European Union, Bauman support his argument based on recent data on the topic: opinion polls and speeches of politicians who are leaders in the main countries that are final destination for these migrants. Convinced that these mass-migratory movements will not be interrupted, the author also mention some theoreticians, such as Immanuel Kant and Hannah Arendt, whose concepts are necessary and relevant to construct a contemporary thinking about the issues arising from migratory subject.
