Abstract

Brazilian writer Erico Verissimo lived in the United States on different ocasions and turned his remarks and observations on the matters of such time periods into travel accounts later published. Between september of
1943 and september of 1944, Verissimo and his family lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles, when the writer performed duties as a college professor and a public speaker aiming at closing the USA-Brazil cultural relations – his travel, financed by the US government, gave origin to The return of the black cat. This paper intents to analize the travel account The return of the black cat based on Mary Louise Pratt’s Imperial eyes: travel writing and transculturation, attempting to perform a reading that is oriented mainly by transculturation, anticonquest, autoetnography, contact zone and seeing-man concepts.
