Utopias, phantoms and fictions of the end

Connections between literature and science in modernity gave rise to new textual types, utopias and travels. These types are the precursor of science fiction as a trial on possible futures. In 1979, Suvin wrote the history of science fiction based on wonderful journeys, alternative islands, and the concept of historical estrangement. Latin American fiction, in which there was no technological development, followed a different path, bordering on the fantastic and supernatural. This paper explores the frontiers and cognitive possibilities of utopia, science fiction, apocalyptic, and phantasmal fictions.
