Abstract

This article studies some particularities of Memorial de Aires’s
fictional diary, relating them to the structures of brazilian society
in the nineteenth century. The author attempts to demonstrate
that the treatment given to the diary form by the narrator of the
novel corresponds to typical social practices of the Second Empire’s elite.
