José Veríssimo, a reader of foreigners

Abstract

Articles written by José Veríssimo between 1899 and 1908 for Jornal do Comércio, Revista Brasileira, Correio da Manhã and for the periodicals Renascença and Kosmos are examined. They were published in three volumes in 1902, 1905 and 1910, and finally collected and republished in 2000. Veríssimo's erudition is highlighted in the texts, and his concern with social and historical themes is investigated. An attempt is given to make visible the interest he nourished for Hispano-American letters.
