The tale: Italian fables and the memory

In Italian fables (1990), Italo Calvinocollects, selects and translates various tales from various Italian dialects. Thus, considering Italo Calvino’s relationship with fables, tales and texts whose boundary between reality and imagination is very thin, we aim to analyze the relation of the tale with memory, based on the studies by Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Michael Pollak (1989), Jeanne Marie Gagnebin (2002), Michel Pêcheux (2007); from Andre Jolles (1976) studies of short stories. Given the importance assumed by memory and oral testimonies as a sources of “truth”, we see the relationship of memory with the fable because it is a narrative that was initially extracted “from the mouth of the people” and, therefore, we consider that what people narrated was what was part of their memories, their past, and the social group to which they belonged. That said, we see the relation or the tale to memory by virtue of its subjective, social and real-imaginary character.
