Surface dynamics in a semi-arid watershed by the usage of cesium-137: case study of the Riacho Salgado drainage basin, Pernambuco State

Abstract

The surface dynamics of a small semi-arid watershed was assessed in order to verify the relationship between recent sediments, land use, and surface processes. To interpret these interconnections, the redistribution of sediments on transversal profiles was measured, from the interfluve to the base of the slope bordering the channel, based on the distribution of the cesium-137 inventory up to 12 cm deep. The results obtained by the proportional method and simplified mass balance pointed to maximum levels of erosion at the base of the slopes between 6-9 cm in depth, reaching 27.05 ± 9.5 t ha-1 y-1. On the surface, the maximum reached was 12.7 ± 5.8 t ha-1 y-1. Erosion rates along the profiles indicate that the basin fits into Schumm's naturally erosive systems, even in areas under conserved thorn-scrub. The total rates ranged from 6 to 60 t  ha-1 y-1.
