The spatial configuration of an Andean city is determined by its location between mountains and valleys. This is the case of the city of La Paz, located in the valley of the river Choqueyapu between 3,400 and 4,100 meters above sea level. The city founded in 1548 continues to grow steadily. In Bolivia the urbanization process is initiated between 1976 and 1992 when urban areas come to have greater population than rural areas. The growth of cities is accelerated in the decade of the 80s. The slopes and edges of rivers are new spaces occupied by the rapid growth of the city. The occupation of these spaces creates disasters in places never before perceived as dangerous. The monitoring with aerial photographs and satellite imagery can explain what is the pattern followed by inhabitants to build the city on dangerous places.
