This paper focuses on the relationship between people and the places where they live, inside the discussion about the changes in social ties in the current phase of modernity. We use empirical, qualitative and exploratory research, interviewing migrants workers who live in Macaé-RJ. We investigate affiliations and social ties established within the city, to discuss hypotheses that explain them, with emphasis on contemporary setting time/space and on the symbolic construction of urban areas. There is a polarization between professional sphere and personal sphere, and a lack of opportunities for creation of other ties, affiliations and commitments. The high mobility influences the relationship of individuals with the city. But the main difficulty in forming social ties originates in global social dynamics of time, space and social relations: it is linked to lack of access to public dialogue and debate issues of collective spaces.
