Abstract

The article has the intention go back to the debate about the translation of Freud’s writings, focusing on the concept ofTrieb, one of the most important in Freudian psychoanalysis and also the most difficult to translate. Our thesis is that unlike the translators usually claim, the choice between the two Portuguese most popular terms – instinto or pulsão– is not due to technical factors but primarily to political ones. We choose to approach this matter from three points of Freudian work, that is, the theory of desire and responsibility, the debate between the naturalist and the culture position and about the heredity theory.
