Abstract

Three short stories of Kawabata Yasunari's Tanagokoro no shôsetsu (Short stories that fit in the palm of a hand) are analysed. They are: Thank You, Chastity under the roof and Cut the nails in the morning. They have many aspects which allow to interpret them as a trilogy that tells about the periods of a woman's life. In the first one and in the last one, Kawabata deals with episodes that changed the protagonists^ lives. In the second one, he approaches daily life of one of them. These short stories are one more proof of this writer^s attitude, who believed in the beautiful and benevolent side of the human being, even in unhappy situations.
