Author Guidelines

1. Content and format

1.1 – The journal Estudos Japoneses publishes academic papers on topics related to Japanese Language, Literature, and Culture (within the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences). Manuscripts can be submitted in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and in Japanese.

1.2- Manuscripts should be typed on standard A4 paper in Word, 12-point font Times New Roman, one-inch (2.5 cm) margins with 1.5 spacing, justified, and no more than 20 pages in length.

1.3- Manuscripts should be organized as follows: Title, Author(s), Abstract in English, five keywords in English, Introduction, Subtitles, Conclusion and References. Use the following words in bold: Abstract: xxxx; Keywords: xxx; xxx; xxx; xxx; xxx.

1.4. TITLE must be in bold and upper case (capital letters) and aligned to the left margin, with no more than 2 lines in length.

1.5. – Author(s) and corresponding author(s) name(s) must be in italics and in bold, aligned to the right margin, 8 lines below the title, in the order: first name, middle name and last name. Use a footnote to indicate each author’s and co-author(s) institutional affiliation, academic position and electronic address (without the word e-mail).

1.5.1 – The author(s) and co-author(s) institutional affiliation must be complete: academic position, department, institution, followed by the institution official acronym in parenthesis, or organizational affiliation and its location, including city, state/province (if applicable), country and e-mail address. If an author has multiple affiliations, enter all affiliations on the title page. Example: Professor, Department of Oriental Languages (DLO), University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brazil; john@usp.br      

1.6. The abstract must not exceed 250-300 words and must be placed two lines below the author(s) name(s). Use single space to separate the abstract from the keywords. 

1.7 – The words Introduction, Conclusion, and the subtitles, if any, must be in bold, aligned to the left, and introduced by a sequential number followed by a dot. Example: 1. Introduction

1.8 – Citations up to three lines must be in the body of the text with the author’s surname, publishing date, and the page(s) number (s) in parentheses. Longer citations must be transcribed without quotation marks, in font size 11, in single space, and one-inch (2.5 cm) aligned to the left margin. All the works cited must be listed in the references:

1.8.1- Books; SURNAME, First name (without abbreviation). Book’s name in bold: subtitle in upright. Edition. City: publisher, year of edition. Series, number of the series, if any. Example: SANTOS, Alberto. Língua Japonesa: traduções. 1ª. ed. São Paulo: Saraiva, 1920.

1.8.2 – Articles: SURNAME, First name (in full), Title of article in upright. Journal title in bold, Publication venue (city), volume, number, initial and final pages, month, year. Example: SAVIANI, Demerval. A Universidade e a Problemática da Educação e Cultura. Educação Brasileira, Brasília, v.1, n.3, p. 35-58, maio/agosto, 1979.

1.8.3- Chapter of books: SURNAME, First name (in full). Chapter title. In: SURNAME, First name (in full) of editor. Edition. City: Publisher, Year. Chapter number, if any, initial-final pages. Ex.: CUNHA, Alves. Ações para deter o desmatamento. In: GOUVEIA, Cristine (org.). Ecologia Mundial. 2ª. ed. São Paulo: Ed. Crescer, 1999. Capítulo 13, p. 179-185.

1.8.4- In the case of different titles from the same author published in the same year, put a letter after each book year (example: SANTOS, 2011a; 2011b).

1.9- Japanese romanization must follow the Hepburn system. Long vowels must be indicated by a circumflex accent (ex. â, ô, û). An apostrophe must be used to mark the separation of the syllables in words such as shin’yô or Man’yôshû. Kanji can be used as long as accompanied by its correspondent in Roman letters. Japanese proper names must follow the Japanese system: surname and name. Examples: 万葉集 (man’yôshû); Natsume Sôseki.

1.10 – Authors are responsible for the paper’s authenticity and content. From 2020, submissions will be accepted if the author or at least one of the authors must held the academic title of doctor or PhD.

1.11 - If accepted, the article will only be published with the author ORCID identifier.

1.11- The journal Estudos Japoneses will be published on-line.
