Abstract

PTE LUÍS Gonzaga das Virgens was one of four people executed (hanged and quartered) on Nov. 8, 1799, in the Brazilian city of Salvador, Bahia. Among the three others (Lucas Dantas de Amorim Tores, Manuel Faustino dos Santos Lira and João de Deus do Nascimento) he stood out for his higher education level. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Portuguese and creoles; on his father's side, of creoles. A practicing Catholic, he nursed and made manifest a rebellious feeling against the predominant color prejudice of his day.
