Abstract

THE KARIRI-XOCÓ inhabit the lower São Francisco region in the state of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil. Utilitarian pottery is one of their basic income-generating activities and the ceramic artifacts are produced and marketed by women. This essay is a foreword on the history of this kind of ceramics and depicts the day-to-day of the potters, their expectations and their way of living.
