From the reading of exercise books 53 and 55, both related to the composition of the novel The prisoner, we highlight a series of notes that resurrect an old critical discussion about the proustian "I", often taken as an indication of the autobiographical nature of the novel. This paper analysis the development of such first person in the literary career of the writer to show that the use of "I" did not emerge spontaneously in Proust's work.
