The purpose of this paper is to discuss the autobiography as an expression of the African-American woman in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, written by Maya Angelou, and published in 1969. Some reading perspectives are presented, such as female agency and violence, as well as some aspects related to the complexity of the autobiography as a genre due to its positioning on the border between fact and fiction, personal and political agendas, among others.
