Homi K. Bhabha (1998) when talking about the notion of the in-between place shows us that there is a constant of identities in transit. In the diasporic process, while inhabiting the "center", the subject that is located in the "margin" has his identity fragmented as a result of the "middle", which he starts to occupy. Following this line of reasoning, in this work we analyze the novel Lucy, by Jamaica Kincaid (1994). As a starting point of the investigation, we look at the formation of the identity of the protagonist Lucy in the between-place/among-means, thought by Bhabha (1998). For this, we developed a dialogue between the fragmentation of the subject in the face of existing in two extremes (the center and the margin), with the conception of self-definition, elaborated by Patricia Hill Collins (2019), and that of eccentricity, coined by Linda Hutcheon (1991). From the theoretical articulation, we evidence that the character's identity is constructed through decentralization that, despite fragmenting the subject, displaces innate and unified identities. We infer, therefore, that although she inhabits the in-between that indefinitely defines her, Lucy recovers her identity through the refusal of the place assigned to her as a diasporic subject.
