Abstract

In this paper, we intend to seek in which way an identity – in this particular case the afro-Brazilian identity – which, as a result of the historical elements, has been fragmented, can recur to literature to recover its “underground memories”. The term “diaspora”, although polemical in this case, can be used to refer to the compelled migration suffered by the Africans who would later become slaves at their arrival to Brazil. Their descendants, whose approach is the quest of the lost identity fragments, can find the beginning of an answer in the recovery of these « underground memories » (POLLAK, 1993), as we will see firstly. Secondly, we will think in an in-depth way at the importance of the collective memory of a marginalized group for the construction of its identity. Lastly, we will evoke the necessity of the rewriting of the history from a new point of view in Becos da Memória (2017), from Conceição Evaristo.
